In 1858, Emil Dresel brought the first Sylvaner cuttings to America and planted them on what is now the SCRIBE Estate in Sonoma, CA. In homage to Emil, we planted one acre of Sylvaner in 2007 on the southwest facing slope of Arrowhead Mountain. In 2016 we expanded our plantings, bringing our total planted area three acres. Our sustainably farmed Sylvaner vineyard is composed of both volcanic tuff and Huichica loam soil.
2021 meteorological data: A dry winter with below-average rainfall and a cool start to spring kept the vines dormant late into March. The spring months stayed dry and cool, slowing shoot growth and contributing to low yields and small berries. Once under full canopy later in the season, the fruit developed evenly with concentrated flavor, color and texture. Harvest began on August 13th with favorable, temperate weather throughout the picking season.
