The original settlers of the SCRIBE Estate, Emil Dresel and his brother Julius arrived from Geisenheim, Germany with vine cuttings from their family’s ancestral vineyard in tow. It was 1858, California’s Wild West era, and the Riesling and Sylvaner vines they brought were the first of their kind in California.

The vines thrived until Prohibition took effect in 1919. In 2008, we took cuttings of Riesling and Sylvaner with DNA lineage linking back to the Dresels and grafted them here in the volcanic soils of Arrowhead Mountain Slope. 

With each vintage of this second era on the Estate, we learn more about how these varietals reflect the terroir of this site, and we’re delighted to share these historic bottlings together this season.

We've learned that Sylvaner grown in these volcanic soils and graced with the daily salty bay breeze, yields fresh, textured, and delicious wine.

Citrus Blossom, Slate, Cactus Fruit
After ten years, we have come to understand how to capture this noble grape’s higher tones and fresh characteristics. Our Riesling is dry – with 0.0 grams of residual sugar – which gives center stage to the pleasures of its unique minerality and evocative floral and stone fruit aromatics.

Pomelo, Honeycomb, Oyster Shell
Deep in the ravine on the hillside of Arrowhead Mountain lie the two plots that make up our Estate Hillside Riesling. The dry wine possesses a distinctive density and texture – a notable honeycomb quality that often precedes the ethereal petrol character that Riesling can develop with age.
